Tzventan Todorov is a french philosopher who lived in France since 1963 writing books and essays about literacy, history and culture theory. He is a man who has basically states most of the movie plot lines from a common pattern.
- Equilibrium - this stage provides stability at the start, at a point of time where everything is as it should be.
- The Disruption - a state when a problem or an even occurs changing the routine of stability.
- Recognition - the realization that there has been a disruption.
- Attempt to repair - the characters try to fix the conflict the distribution is causing.
- The New Equilibrium - it isn't the original Equilibrium because of the effects the disruption has caused. It is usually reprieved as the new norm.
Using Dracula Untold as my example movie there is a clear picture of a all 5 stages starting off with:
- Vlad III is enjoying his life with his wife and child as the prince of Wallachia protecting his people.
- When Sultan Mehmed demands 1,000 of the country's boys, including his son, for their army.
- Vlad makes a deal with a monster (vampire) to give him strength to defeat the Turks.
- When Vlad is fighting the Turks his people start to notice that he has demon like powers and start to fear him.
- The new Equilibrium is that Vlad is now a powerful vampire who has lived for hundreds of years and is now walking around modern day time while his family rest in peace.
This is the basic out line of the theory and given this example you can see that it fits in well with Todorov's theory.
