Poster Ideas

This is the 1st idea that I want for my poster, the 2 pictures are the base line ideas contrasting them, one shrouded in darkness and the other illuminated still hiding his face from the views to catch peoples eyes. I want the poster to be vague to keep actors hidden but make people think who it might be. I want to change the font to something less solid and pointy, i want to make it smoother and bolder. Im going to add smaller text at the bottom and a release date to give the viewers something ti be excited about.

This version of the poster idea has a font change along side a colour change. The font has been duplicated to be parallel to the pictures showing a contrast. This idea is not solid that font may change depending on the outcome of our main title for the trailer.

Locations

A location that we might use is the side of a road as an area for some action and dialogue scene.

If we can use a barn or an open field then we will use it for our chase scene and our ending

Ferry Meadows is another outside location that will be used for a chase scene and a fighting scene.

No longer going to be used

Different house are going to be used for a narration purposes such as my home is being used to interrogate people and my partners house is being used as the scene of the crime.

Partner James Ross's house is being used as the crime scene and other interrogation scene.

My shed is going to be used for another type of interrogation scene.

Interrogation scene is now going to be in a room at school which has a glass window to look inside.

Company logo - Neon Lights

Base background for my neon title but the image is too bright to use so i need to darken it down to fit what i want to see.

These two pictures show how i managed to change a bright coloured picture to something dark and atmospheric to fit my kind of theme. Feathering was placed around the shape that was used to give a smoother kind of look rather than making it to bold.

When creating the text it was hard to find some good looking ones that would fit the neon kind of scene and this was what i could find. There is little colour on it which i want to change soon as so far it makes it look boring and bland.

All these images show the different layers of the same image but they all serve a different purpose as they all increase the amount of light created on the text and another is the ring around the text. There are 4 pre-comps that are similar as they are copies of each other with various settings. with this progression it has made it clear to see how bold the light is making it clear what each colour is.

We chose to remove the ring around the text as it did not really fit in and it didn't have any light emitting of it. But because of that it still looked very dark not emitting any light of it's own.

To make the light look more realistic I added 4 colour gradient which allows me to grab the colour from the text and use it behind it to give it a light reflection off the wall which makes it look more realistic and look amazing.

Teaser Posters v Theatrical Posters

The point of teaser posters are so that people are kept in the dark about what to expect. Teaser posters are made months in advance from the theatrical poster and the trailer and are normally showing a single frame or an alternative frame from a clip. It can also just show part of the main protagonist and for my example i am using James Bond (or Daniel Craig) who is widely know for this role making him a great choice of what to put on the poster.

Teaser poster

What you see is the teaser poster for Skyfall with very limited  colour and text but you do get a clear figure. It does have a date on the teaser poster stating November 7th 2012. The main figure is only showing the lower half of his face keeping him hidden from the audience. Fans of James Bond will want to see his full face to get the full fell of who they are looking at if its a new Bond or their iconic Bond. In terms of text it does not show who made it but it does leave a small web ip at the bottom for views to see.

Theatrical poster

The theatrical poster has a lot more to it as it should and some clear changes, the date has changed but that can be because the release date might of been for a different country and it has some colour to it a bit on the text in areas and Bond has his full body coloured whereas the background is the same black and white as it was before. For the texted it shows some of the actors and company associated to them.

Bus Stops
Bus stop advertising is something that you see when you are walking past or waiting for a bus.
You can walk past without looking, you can be in a car driving past it going fast you won't see it. Some posters are only on one side.
Billboards
They are very large and are posted along busy streets or on top of buildings. They are suppose to be the most noticeable.
Like the bus stop it can be easy to drive by and not notice it.

Based on the results that I have obtained there will be some changes in the way we lay out the story of the trailer so that we can meet the need of the responses, action and thrills are the main points made in our responses. This indicates that both genders like action and all say they like crime/thrillers indication that we have selected a strong genre.

We let people watch the trailer and the overall rating we got is 4.5 stars which gave us confidence in what we had created.

From looking at the comparable profile it clearly shows that this movie isnt for the younger audience under 14 but its highly rates towards  15-24. The movie IT is a horror which is normally associated with both gender type audience because horror is meant to be for thrill seekers. The main reason why it more attracted to the female audience is because it is partly a drama which is more associated with women as they enjoy this more than guys would. The class of people that this would be aimed towards are middle to lower class because they would be people who would go to the cinema to watch it more than the upper class not saying that they don't but its more uncommon.

Having a target audience is important for companies in producing media products so that they can draw in different type of people for example, an superhero movie aged 15 will be aimed at teenagers who enjoy hardcore action with a compelling story. Movies aged PG for example, Pokemon movie are aimed at children who enjoy animated movie and bright colours. This does not mean it is limited to them, adults can view this movies for different reason, memories from childhood or viewing it with their children.

Sound in trailers

Sound in trailers are vital to how people can view the trailer, for example if it was a kids movie trailer then they would want the music to be nice a calm along side the characters but have some up beat music that adults can like to reach a wider audience.

The “Braaam” in the Inception Trailer:

The fog horn in this trailer makes for a build up in the stages of transition. It builds tension between each straight cut making the editing another part that applies to the sounding this trailer to make the pot horn effective. The music plays through out the trailer with the up beat tune keeping the audience to their seats and fast action keeping eyes to the screen.

The “Distortion Booms” and “Stutter Downers” in the Elysium Trailer:

The sound in this trailer make for an interesting layout the first 0:50 seconds the music playing is slowly building up from a nice civilised place to a run down destroyed world. The music slows down and is in the background while the character talk.

Foley sound
This is when sound is recreated to sound like everyday sounds just enhanced and in better quality from the original, for example the sound of footsteps in snow is hard to pick up from normal sound so they remake it from rice in a glove being crushed. Foley is a great way of getting original sound but is hard to do as it requires great timing. Using the right props is also very important as they would want to recreate sounds accurately ensure the film would be more realistic.

Diegetic sound
Diegetic sounds are sounds that a person can hear such as voices from characters or sounds made by objects. Diegetic sounds is commonly seen on screen but can be show off screen if its out of frame.

Non-diegetic sound
These are sounds that can't be hear from characters in the story such as narration or added sound effects.

Trailers as Multi-modal Texts

TITLE OF TRAILER:  Alien Covenant
FEATURES OF MULTIMODAL TEXT
DESCRIPTION OF FEATURE IN TRAILER
ANALYSIS OF IMPACT ON AUDIENCE
Written text on screen
The writing say 'From Ridley Scott'  in a common type of text but its sharp giving it solid edges.
The type of text can depend on how serious they want to make the film for example bubbly text would be aimed more towards a younger audience whereas this type of text it aimed for a more mature audience.
Spoken language
The spoken language in this trailer is English
Since English is a widely used language thousands of people would be able to watch it without having to read subtitles.
Moving images

In this part of the trailer it gives the idea that the people on the planet are on where the last people where on in the Alien without giving too much away.
This give teasers of what people can expect in the film without the full length letting people judge to go and see it or not.
Sound effects
The sound of nature, people and sudden alien attacks makes for an action packed trailer. Different effects placed in a scene can make for something horrifying.
This can affect how people view the trailer as less distorted sound effects and more natures sound effects can make it seem quite childish.
Music
The sound at the start of the trailer is nice and clam showing peace between people whereas later on the music picks up becoming fast pace action type music.
This can play a trick on the audience as it makes them think that its not an action movie but more a romance but them in a split second puts them on the edge of their seats.

Vladamir Propp theory

Vladimir was a literary critic and a scholar who found that certain types of characters are used in ever narrative structure. His theory has influenced filmmakers to writing and producing successful narratives.

Character types:

  • The villain - Fights the hero in some way, tends to capture the princess in some way to use against the hero.
  • The Hero - The one who fights the villain to save people, town and bring peace.
  • The dispatcher - this is the person who makes the evil know people so that they can find people who will fight back and send them off.
  • The helper - Assists the hero by giving them something of use.
  • The princess or the prize - The princess is normally the person who is capture by the villain and then saved by the hero. At the end of the journey the hero will marry the princess making it a happily ever after.
  • The princesses father - Gives the task to the hero to save his daughter but also appears to be the false hero

Forms and Conventions

The Autopsy of Jane Doe

The R represents that it is for a more mature audience restricting who can view it however, it can also make it a more desirable trailer to watch due to its content. This is shown for 5 seconds giving people time to read it.

Company title IFC midnight being known for The human centipede and Fury. This title is shown for around 2 seconds fading in and out relatively quickly.  There is sound playing over it (a slow piano)

IM GLOBAL is shown for the same amount of time but is much clearer to see compared to IFC. sound playing over (slow piano)

The sound a bell from an earlier part of the trailer giving the idea that she is still alive in a different way.

The same bell was recycled in this on screen text for dramatic effect.

Film title name. It runs for 4 seconds and play a sinister static, distorted sound of someone/thing.

Character introduction of the dead person who turns out to be the monster in the trailer. She is show many time in the trailer giving and indication that the film would be a bout her. 3 seconds long

Two other character introduction of a young and woman. The woman is more energetic than the man but they both seem to be a couple.

The last character introduction is of this man who is presumably the farther of the other man. He is shown as almost weird character as he laughs when the girl asks "Whats that for?" He laughs and replies "to make sure their dead".

Levi Strauss narrative theory

Claude Levi Strauss was a french anthropologist and ethnologist. He came up with the theory of Binary Opposites meaning that every narrative has an opposite of something.

Examples:

  • Hero - villan
  • Good - Bad
  • Rural - Urban
  • Innocent - Corrupt
  • Human - Inhuman
And the list goes on but the point is that the conflict of binary opposites is what makes the climax of the narrative structure. Each Binary Opposite has a clear contrast.

Barthes Narrative and Film Trailers

Todorov Narrative and Film Trailers

Who is Todorov?

Tzventan Todorov is a french philosopher who lived in France since 1963 writing books and essays about literacy, history and culture theory. He is a man who has basically states most of the movie plot lines from a common pattern.

  1. Equilibrium - this stage provides stability at the start, at a point of time where everything is as it should be.
  2. The Disruption - a state when a problem or an even occurs changing the routine of stability.
  3. Recognition - the realization that there has been a disruption.
  4. Attempt to repair - the characters try to fix the conflict the distribution is causing.
  5. The New Equilibrium - it isn't the original Equilibrium because of the effects the disruption has caused. It is usually reprieved as the new norm.
Using Dracula Untold as my example movie there is a clear picture of a all 5 stages starting off with:
  1. Vlad III is enjoying his life with his wife and child as the prince of Wallachia protecting his people.
  2. When Sultan Mehmed demands 1,000 of the country's boys, including his son, for their army.
  3. Vlad makes a deal with a monster (vampire) to give him strength to defeat the Turks.
  4. When Vlad is fighting the Turks his people start to notice that he has demon like powers and start to fear him.
  5. The new Equilibrium is that Vlad is now a powerful vampire who has lived for hundreds of years and is now walking around modern day time while his family rest in peace.
This is the basic out line of the theory and given this example you can see that it fits in well with Todorov's theory.
